It's OK to Ask is here as a reminder that your voice matters in your healthcare.
When you understand what is going on with your health, you can make better decisions around care and treatment.
You can do this by asking questions.

Why asking questions matters
When patients feel able to ask questions, it helps to:
- Improve understanding of care and treatment
- Support shared decision-making
- Raise worries or concerns early
- Reduce anxiety about what will happen next
Good communication is a key part of safe, respectful and compassionate care
Questions you may want to ask
You may find it helpful to ask:
- Why am I here?
- What are my options?
- What happens next?
- Is there anything else I should know or ask about?
There are no “silly” questions. If something is unclear, it is OK to ask staff to explain things again, explain things in a different way or write information down for you.
Children and young people
Children and young people are encouraged to ask questions and be involved in their care in ways that feel right for them.
Simple language, visual prompts and clear explanations can help younger patients understand:
- Why am I here today
- What will happen next
- Who is looking after me
Be prepared for your next visit
Be ready for next visit by downloading the It’s OK to Ask patient information leaflet.
The leaflet outlines questions you may want to ask when using our services. It also includes a blank space on the back so that you can make notes.
