Children's Community Asthma Nursing Service
This page is for all care professionals who need the service referral information or other relevant documentation.
We are pleased to introduce you to our Children’s Community Asthma Nurse Specialist Service.
Our role is to provide dedicated support for children and young people with asthma, with a particular focus on those who may be harder to reach, more vulnerable, or living in underserved areas of our county. We work closely with families, schools, and health professionals to ensure these children receive the care, education, and guidance they need to manage their asthma safely and effectively.
By reaching out to these groups, we aim to
- Improve asthma awareness and self-management skills.
- Reduce avoidable hospital admissions and emergency attendances.
- Promote equal access to asthma support across the community.
Comprehensive support for children and young people (CYP) with asthma requires collaboration across a wide range of professionals and services. Health care practitioners, including GPs, nurses, and pharmacists, play a central role in delivering clinical care and ensuring that every CYP has at least an annual asthma review with their GP.
Beyond the health sector, teachers, school staff, clubs and sports coaches, are instrumental in raising awareness of asthma, recognising symptoms, and providing safe environments for CYP to participate fully. Together, these professionals help to ensure that asthma management is integrated into daily life, empowering CYP and their families to manage the condition effectively and reducing the risk of serious exacerbations.
E-learning modules on the E-Learning for Health Tier Training platform provide current guidance for asthma care in children and young people. These courses cover asthma management, symptom recognition, and best practices in educational and community settings, helping staff deliver safe and inclusive care confidently.
